Officers use Petards ANPR technology outside Sheppey prison

5 May 2011

More than 750 vehicles were checked by Petard's ANPR cameras last month, in an operation on the Isle of Sheppey to combat crime.

The checks were carried out on vehicles using Church Road in Eastchurch. This location, just inside the Isle Of Sheppey Prison Cluster of HMP Elmley, Swaleside and Standford Hill was chosen in order to catch those engaged in illegal activity who are using the road network.

Multi-agency approach

Over 30 staff including police officers, dog handlers, prison officers and representatives from DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) took part.

The roads on the custer are used on a daily basis by a large number of non-official vehicles and visitors, as well as by prison staff.

Over the course of the day, police stopped a large number of vehicles and visitors entering and leaving the complex.

Two vehicles seized

758 vehicles were recorded using the ANPR technology. Of that 52 vehicles were stopped. Below are some of the results:

  • Two vehicles were seized for no insurance/no license
  • Several drivers were given fixed penalty notices for various offences including a child not wearing a seatbelt
  • Three drivers were found with cannabis and given warnings. They were then refused entry to the prison.

Inspector Alan Rogers of the Island Neighbourhood Team led the operation said: 'We are really grateful to the Prison Service for allowing us to work with them on this operation. The positive results achieved today show how effective working with other partners can be. I hope our actions reinforce the message to visitors that neither the police, or prison staff, will tolerate any illegal activity on the premises. Anyone caught will be dealt with quickly and robustly and we will look to do similar operations in future.'

Rob Waddington, Head of Defence & Security at Petards said 'We are delighted that Petards cameras have once again been used successfully to combat
